Business Assessments

Dr. Karin Luck offers professional business assessments of companies. A business assessment is a financially and operationally objective view of a business that is in need of change.

We focus on the strengths, weaknesses, business opportunities, prospects of improvement, ways to improve bottom-line performance, employee satisfaction, business ethics and values in order to enhance a business’s overall market value.

Career Assessments

Dr. Karin Luck offers a range of assessment services.

The aim of the assessment is to assist in the collection and integration of a wide range of information about an individual, in order to provide valuable insight, support, and recommendations for a range of challenges.

These challenges include scholastic difficulties, school subject choice decisions, career choice decisions, and career planning and development.

All assessments include an intake interview, the administration of appropriate assessment measures, and a feedback session with a written report.

Educational Assessment

An educational assessment aims at evaluating a child’s cognitive, social and emotional functioning. This assists in determining a child’s strengths and areas of development, and difficulties that a child may be experiencing. This assessment is recommended for children/adolescents who are not coping at school, who are performing poorly or not making progress, and children who are displaying poor motivation, refusing to go to school and showing other signs of emotional or behavioral stress.

Subject Choice Assessment

Subject choice assessments are aimed at assisting grade 8 learners in selecting appropriate school subjects for grade 9-12. As subject choices at this level impacts on future study options and career choices, this assessment provides valuable insight and information in order to guide informed subject selections.

Career Assessment

Career/vocational assessments are suited to:

School leavers who require assistance in making a study or career decisions;
Graduates planning a career; and
Individuals considering a change in career or return to studies.
The assessment battery measures cognitive ability, values, and interests. The integration of results assists the individual to make an informed decision with regards to various study or career options.

Family Therapy

The method of intervention used is Family and Systemic Psychotherapy – which helps people in a close relationship help each other. With the aid of Dr. Luck as your therapist, it aims at allowing family members to help one another.

Family therapy enables family members to express emotions, explore difficulties safely, to understand one another’s experiences and viewpoints, to appreciate one another’s needs, help to build strengths, overcome weaknesses and to ultimately change their lives together.

Marriage Guidance Counseling

Marriage counseling is the process of counseling couples to recognise and resolve conflicts in order to improve your relationship.

Through marriage counseling, you and your partner can make decisions to rebuild your relationship.

Mediation Services

Divorce Mediation; conflict, children, and parenting plans are but a few words and concepts that enter one’s life when faced with the prospect of divorce. One may say that social workers and lawyers work in similar businesses in that helping people to resolve their conflicts is a central mission for both professions.

Thus divorce mediation is a process of dissolving the marriage or the union in a nonadversarial way. The mediator works with the couple to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution to the conflict. The couple will receive a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ which provides guidelines which once acted upon can be taken to an attorney for finalisation. As a mediator, no sides are taken, as it is essential to be a neutral facilitator at all times.

Parenting Workshops

Parenting is the most important job you will ever have and yet it is the one where we seek and receive the least amount of training.

There is no one single reason for attending parenting classes. Just like every child is different, every family has different needs.

No parent wants their child to have problems, but when problems do arise, a parenting class can offer valuable information, help you gain perspective and find support. Certain parenting classes can delve into serious issues or conditions. You might choose to attend a class simply to have your questions answered or brush up on key skills. Or, you might have a specific problem or issue, such as a child who is having behavioral issues.

Parents who are struggling with their daily lives or having difficulties understanding certain aspects of child-rearing, such as appropriate versus inappropriate discipline, can benefit from the preventative aspect of an educational programme.

Premarital Counseling

This is an investment that both the bride and groom will benefit from. Premarital counseling will give you a solid foundation for you to build your marriage on. Plan your marriage before you plan your wedding.

Preparing for a wedding is merely the beginning of preparing for marriage. Often, couples are too busy with preparing themselves to be the groom and bride that they overlook preparing themselves to be husband and wife. As much as wedding preparations take time and effort, so does marriage preparation!

A good marriage needs a good foundation. The best time to start marriage preparation is when you and your partner have started to think about marital commitment in your relationship.

Psychotherapy with Individuals

Dr. Karin Luck works with individual clients using an integrated therapeutic approach.

As every person is completely unique, with vastly diverse circumstances, contexts and challenges, people cannot all be treated in a similar way. Rather than utilising any one specific approach, we use a more eclectic approach; a customised, personalised therapeutic intervention to address the pressing difficulties of current life challenges that brings the client to therapy.

In this way, therapy is aligned with needs that facilitate strategic and appropriate work done in therapy. This, in turn, significantly enhances the time and cost effectiveness of therapy sessions.

Sexuality Education

Dr. Karin Luck offers comprehensive sexuality education workshops for children in schools ranging from grade one to grade eight.

Sexuality education is very important in schools. Surveys have confirmed that at least a third of South African teenagers have sex before the age of 16. 11% had sex for the first time when they were only 14. 20% had sex for the first time between the ages of 14 and 16. 34% always used contraception but 34% only used it “sometimes”. Of those surveyed, 38% learn about sex from their friends.

Our sexuality education workshops are age specific and teach children a wide range of information and skills.

WHAT DO SOCIAL WORKERS DO?

Social workers provide services as members of a multidisciplinary team or on a one-to-one basis with the client. The duties performed by social workers vary depending on the settings in which they work.

Social workers in private practice offer their services on a fee-for-service basis to individuals, families and organisations. Their services include counselling, psychotherapy, mediation, sex therapy, policy and program development, organisational development, and employee assistance programs.

Social workers involved in policy analysis, policy development and planning are usually working in federal and provincial departments or social planning councils. Researchers are found in universities and governments. Others are teaching in universities and community colleges.

Social workers employed by child welfare agencies (public and private) investigate cases of family violence, child abuse and neglect and take protective action as required. They may recruit foster parents or supervise the placement of children in protective care. Others work on adoption cases.

Many school boards hire social workers to help students adjust to the school environment. They help students, parents and teachers to deal with problems such as aggressive behaviour, truancy and family problems, which affect the students’ performance.

In general, and psychiatric hospitals, social workers are members of the treatment team. They provide a link between the team and the family as well as with community resources. In these settings they contribute to the care, treatment and rehabilitation of the aged and of physically or mentally ill individuals, as well as the care of disabled persons.

In health and community services centres, social workers are involved in the provision of counselling to individuals or families and in providing services to seniors. Some work as community developers helping citizens to identify their needs and proposing ways of meeting these needs. Others may assist with parent-child relationships and marriage counselling. The services may be offered on an individual basis or in groups.

In the correctional field, social workers may be part of a team concerned with the social rehabilitation of young or adult offenders. They may work as classification officers. Others work as probation officers or as parole officers. Parole officers help ex-prisoners adjust to life in the community while conforming to the conditions of their parole.
